What the People Say
The first in a special weekly series of one, we ask local cricketing
celebrities to recall their favourite ever cricket tea. Week one – Bill
Atkinson
Bill Atkinson
Trigger
fingered Bill is best known to local players as an umpire and has long
been on the cricket circuit and sampled a tea or two in his time at the
middle. In his prime, Bill’s finger was so fast he once gave a
stumping before the ball had passed the batsman!
"I have had a few rank teas in my time I can tell you. Olton,
Hampton, Warwick, Nuneaton, Bulkington, Bedworth, Wolvey, Ambleside,
Courtaulds, Sterling Metals, Herberts, you name them, I’ve moaned
about them! I don’t care much for the fare at Atherstone either
what with their fancy ingredients like mayonnaise, tomato, and god forbid
cucumber. I like simplicity. My favourite tea has to be one I made myself
because I couldn’t stomach another tea like one I had at Griff.
None of your foreign muck like lettuce or chutney – it was just
a plain bread sandwich. Two bits of white bread with another slice between
them – no spread – just simple as it should be. Mmm! ‘OWZAT?
Perfect if you ask me!"
