1st XI Match Report
DATE: Saturday 11th June 2005
OPPONENTS: Marston Green
VENUE: Marston Green
RESULT: Atherstone Won By 5Wkts
POINTS: Atherstone 20pts, Marston Green 6pts
Atherstone
remain undefeated and have climbed to second place in the League
after recording a fine 5 wicket victory at Marston Green – another
solid all round team performance ensured the Adders excellent start
to the season was maintained.
Visiting
skipper Vic Clements won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first
on a wicket that provided assistance to the bowlers all afternoon.
Opener Edwards (20) was the first to fall to Matt Pickering with the
score on 44 in the 9th over. A second wicket partnership
of 78 between Hughes (59) and Hussain (16) pushed the total to 118
in the 22nd over and looked to have laid the foundation
for a big total. However, the canny introduction of Clements to the
attack stalled progress when he removed both batsmen in quick
succession, the dangerous looking Hussain departing after a fine
catch by Mike Pickering at deep square leg. Skipper Johnson
however batted sensibly down the lower order finishing with a well
compiled 62 to push the Birmingham side’s total past the 200 mark.
As usual
Clements gave very little away on a quick scoring ground and was
rewarded with fine figures of 3-51 from his 19.5 over spell.
Pickering also claimed 3 -52 and Craig Wintersgil and Geraint Thomas
also chipped in with a couple of wickets apiece to round off a good
fielding display.
In reply,
Adders openers Dave Blower and Manny Alcock made an excellent start
to the run chase putting on 128 for the first wicket. Blower
departed in the 28th over for a stylish 61 off 65 balls
which included 4 sixes and 5 boundaries. Alcock also passed the
half century mark in style and had made 57 when Hughes claimed his 2nd
victim. There was a brief stutter in the middle of the innings
before Mike Pickering continued his impressive form for his new club
with an undefeated 30 and was ably supported by Wintersgil (15 not
out) to see the Adders home with 5 overs to spare
Skipper Clements
said “I’m delighted with the way things have gone over the first 7
games of the season and in particular with the contribution from
everyone throughout the team. I am hoping the momentum and level of
team performance can continue over the next couple of weeks when we
are on the road again to visit Hampton and Southam”.Scoreboard
